Recently, I’ve decided to embark on an at-home gardening journey. I’ve had many types of plants throughout the years, but I feel like I’ve seen all there is to see with those plants. Don’t get me wrong, I still have plenty of houseplants and love them just as much as at the beginning! I am just trying something new, hoping to learn a few things about indoor gardens.

It feels like more and more people are choosing to embark on a homesteading and life-off-grid journey. With the uncertainty of our climate, it is a great idea. Removing oneself from the electricity and food industry that affects the Earth in such harmful ways sounds like a great idea. Homesteading is all about owning land, usually as a family, and creating as much as possible from scratch. It is about self-sufficiency and acquiring traditional and practical skills.

Life in a self-sufficient home starts with growing your own food. In a cold climate, like in Canada or most of Northern Europe, you cannot just rely on having an outdoor garden for most of the year. The weather does not permit most fruits and vegetables to be grown outdoors all year! Therefore, small greenhouses are needed, which can start with indoor gardens.

By indoor gardens, I mean growing fruits and vegetables within your own home using growing lamps and the warmth of your house. I recently purchased germination trays, potting soil and 3 types of seeds from a Montreal-based nursery. My seeds have yet to arrive since they were ordered by mail, but my living room is sure ready for their arrival. Having plants in your home has many mental and physical health benefits, but seeing a vegetable or fruit grow from scratch, thanks to your gardening skills, is even more beneficial. They not only improve our homes’ air quality but also our compassion and social skills! But the best part is, wouldn’t it be great if you could get kitchen produce right from your home?

I will update you regularly on the state of my first indoor garden, so stay tuned if my journey inspires you!
